Indian Academy Of Pediatrics

The Indian Academy of Pediatrics was formed after amalgamating the Association of Pediatricians in India based at Mumbai and the Indian Pediatric Society based at Calcutta during its joint meeting at Hyderabad in 1963. The IAP Secretariat is situated at Mumbai. Today, the IAP has around 14,000 members with 140 branches which work for the furtherance of IAP's objectives and work independently as per IAP's constitution. The IAP has 13 subspeciality chapters and 4 working groups besides various issue based sub-committees appointed by the Excecutive Board from time to time.

Mission Statement

The Indian Academy of Pediatrics is committed to the improvement of the health and well being of all children. For this purpose, the Academy dedicates its efforts and resources. As members of the Academy we shall strive for the achievement of the optimum growth, development and health in the physical, emotional, mental, social and spiritual realms of all children irrespective of diversities of their backgrounds. We shall fulfill our mission through the following activities :

Advocacy For Children

Serve as advocates for the legitimate causes of children, their growth, development, health, emotional nurture, opportunities, rights, equity and justice. Serve as competent and responsible source of information relevant to the health and well being of children, to other organizations, the public and the governments.

Professional Education And Improvement

Provide and promote ethical and professional standards among the members and provide and promote education and training for the improvement of the knowledge, attitude and skills of members in pediatrics in its widest sense.

Research

Provide leadership, guidance and support for research in its broadest sense, relevant to the health and well being of children.

Support For Pediatricians

Provide a forum for promoting the role and opportunities of pediatricians as the best equipped professionals for the care of sick children and to maintain the health and well being of all children. Remain as the spokesmedium of appropriate training of medical and related supportive professionals involved in the care of children in different settings.

Membership service

Provide services, benefits and recognition to assist and support the members for meeting the needs and challenges inherent in pursuing our mission.

Education of parents and the public

Design and conduct programs and efforts for the education of parents, the public and policy makers on their role in the promotion of health and well being of children at home, in school and in other situations.

Activities

The IAP advocates, encourages and advances the knowledge, study, research and practice of the science of Pediatrics in all possible ways and promotes Continuing Medical Education of its members and generally oversees standards for their professional conduct.

Apart from guiding its members on issues related to Child Survival, IAP also plays a crucial role in propogating the WHO, UNICEF and Government of India policies on Child survival as a "true in service" and actively participates in Government of India's child survival programmes.

The IAP organizes through its branches and subspeciality chapters CMEs, workshops, seminars, updates and conferences at National, Zonal, State, District and Local levels. It also exchanges Medical Teachers/Professionals at International/National level for disseminating, acquiring and imparting knowledge and training through various awards and research fellowships.
